Another Interview

How did you first become involved in electronic music?

It must have been around 92/93. I was (and still am) a die hard metalhead, I was heavily into Earache Records stuff – Godflesh, Terrorizer, Carcass, Confessor, Cathedral and listening to a lot of Doom Metal. My link with electronica was somewhat non-existent except for Godflesh who were using drum computers. I thought bands like G.G.F.H (Global Genocide Forget Heaven) and Ministry were cool as well.

New Interview

Interview with Chain DLK Magazine:

“Here it is a chat with Dutch breakcore musician Jason Kohnen, better known as Bong-Ra, whose original crossover of breakbeat, d’n’b, jungle, gabber, metal, jazz, reaggae and ragga made him one of the most hip producers ever since his debut release “New Millenium Dreadz” back in 1998 (which also happens to be the first Dutch full-length D’n’B album ever released). Now he comes back to the stage with a brand new release, “Monolith”, where he whisks together eggs of metal, dubstep, hip hop and drum’n’bass all while dealing with apocalyptic themes and much more. A concrete meeting point between mythological prediction about mankind’s end and actual obscure reality, whose main explanation seems to be the everlasting conflict between man’s primary instincts of violence, treachery, greed and megalomania on one side and the powerful gift of knowledge, abstract thinking and the perception of emotion on the other. Bong-Ra‘s “Monolith” comes out on PRSPCT Recordings.”

Darkstep!

July 3, 2012 News Comments Off on Darkstep!

Fasten your seatbelt, put on your leaden shoes and try to keep your sweaty hands to yourself: “Darkstep” is here, and things are going to get bloody dark and eerily twisted!

Prime Loops’ brand spanking new killer collection packs more sick thrills than an allnighter of David Lynch’s most out-there movie outings – but here it’s not the eyes which the faint-hearted will want to cover, but first and formemost those fragile eardrums.

“Darkstep” consists of an unsettling 200MB of one-shots, loops and effects which will leave you yearning for no more – because it’s all right there: Ballistic Drums, Percussion and Effects. Devastating Bass One-shots and Basslines. Twisted synth shots and hooks. Vicious Vocal Samples. And a whole number of other sonic weapons to make boom-boom in the most terrifying manner. Don’t laugh now and say have not been warned later!

“Darkstep” is the work of the legendary Bong-Ra, future-proof veteran producer of musical montrosities who has made his mark in an international scene nestled between Breakcore, Jungle, Hardcore, Metal, Dubstep, Hip Hop and other bass-laden sounds. Bong-Ra has created, produced, twisted and mastered each and every sample and loop contained exclusively for this Prime Loops collection – and “Darkstep” is offered to you without any royalties involved whatsoever.

This develish monster of a sample pack even features exclusive elements from Bong-Ra’s latest, groundbreaking PRSPCT album release “Monolith”, which seamlessly mixes all styles with ease, as well as a whole bunch of strong vocal samples from the American rapper Sole, of Anticon fame!

Featured Review

If I always felt some sort of adversity towards electronics music it wasn’t because I thought it was unable to take music to places where the human capability was uncapable of exploring, but because I thought of it as a soulless craft. It was ignorant and short sighted of me to think that way because clearly, whether through guitars or programming it all still comes as spawn of human creativity.

Everyone has their dark side,” laughs Jason Köhnen. The man better known as Bong-Ra, responsible for some of the most thrashing electronic music out there, has just admitted to having “a thing” for Rod Stewart in hot pants—one of the many surprises thrown up in our interview. Another: He rarely listens to electronic music at home, preferring more “organic” strains of audio, as he calls it.
