Interview from the Vault

August 2, 2011 News Comments Off on Interview from the Vault

All The Colours Of The Night

July 11, 2011 News Comments Off on All The Colours Of The Night

ADN140The night has roared, and now has many colours and shades on King Cannibal’s most varied record to date. From this established producer’s insidious remix of Bong-Ra’s “Come Out To Play” or Machine Code’s anthemic and furious version of “Dirt” to the more laid back and melodic remixes by Krumble and Dead Fader, this EP is an accurate snapshot of what King Cannibal is about: not only can he pack a dancefloor, but he also delivers gentle tunes or impressive beatwork. King Cannibal has a posse, an untamed, diverse one.(get this on 12″ / as digital files) That Dylan Richards (King Cannibal) is an astute remixer and collaborator is a known fact. From the high-profile guests featured on his Ninja Tune releases to the extensive DJ and remixer works of his early years, he’s always been somebody eager to work with other producers. This is the case again with “All The Colours Of The Night”, which could somewhat have been titled “All The Colours of King Cannibal”: four tracks written with four other artists, and four different takes at King Cannibal’s sound.

Sick Sick Sick

July 8, 2011 News Comments Off on Sick Sick Sick

If I always felt some sort of adversity towards electronics music it wasn’t because I thought it was unable to take music to places where the human capability was uncapable of exploring, but because I thought of it as a soulless craft. It was ignorant and short sighted of me to think that way because clearly, whether through guitars or programming it all still comes as spawn of human creativity. Plus by now things have changed, a plethora of bold musicians are pushing the envelope in unimaginable ways and are helping rejuvenate genres that may have in many senses exhausted themselves; melting extreme metal, IDM, drum & bass and others shaping music that is as cutting edge as it is absurdly heavy fast and extreme. To me nowhere is that more evident than on the killer compilation Full Metal Racket which presents re-recorded and remastered versions Bong-Ra’s 12” EPs Sick Sick Sick and Grindkrusher. The resulting product is thoroughly enjoyable, offensive, fucking crushing from any angle and thoroughly fresh. I plead ignorance as far as an existing scene making this type of mélange, so if I call Bong-Ra groundbreaking and is not, excuse me!.

Everyone has their dark side,” laughs Jason Köhnen. The man better known as Bong-Ra, responsible for some of the most thrashing electronic music out there, has just admitted to having “a thing” for Rod Stewart in hot pants—one of the many surprises thrown up in our interview. Another: He rarely listens to electronic music at home, preferring more “organic” strains of audio, as he calls it.
